Kate Fuentes, Founder and CEO, Ascent Governance & Advisory

Ascent reflects a belief in progress—thoughtful, disciplined, and sustained. My commitment to clients is to help boards, leaders and organizations navigate complexity, strengthen decision-making, and move forward with clarity and purpose.

Background

Kate Fuentes is a former General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer with more than 25 years of experience advising boards and leadership teams in the financial services industry.

She has been in the room for hundreds of board meetings and knows what effective governance looks like in practice.

Kate has operated in a variety of sectors in highly regulated environments and through various market cycles and events. Her work spans across retail and institutional advisers and funds/ETFs, retirement platforms and services, insurance products, alternatives, and wealth management. She also has deep expertise with corporate governance - for corporations, funds, and other regulated entities within the above sectors.

What distinguishes Kate’s practice is a rare ability to integrate legal, regulatory, and commercial perspectives — connecting governance design, strategy, and enterprise risk in ways that drive better decisions.

Over her career, Kate has served as General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and in senior legal roles across different business segments within major financial institutions. She has worked with boards, executive leadership teams, and senior stakeholders through periods of significant regulatory, structural, and market complexity. Earlier in her career, Kate practiced law at a leading global Am Law 50 firm, advising investment companies, advisers, and boards across a broad range of fund structures and transactions. She also has general corporate, transactional, and M&A experience.

Kate brings deep board-facing experience, including with independent mutual fund boards, and is adept at navigating complex corporate governance environments. She has worked closely with board and committee chairs on optimizing board effectiveness and has guided boards through strategic transactions, board transitions, and how to manage emerging risks. Kate also coaches executive teams on board engagement.

Her work consistently bridges the boardroom and the executive suite, helping organizations strengthen how they govern, communicate, and make decisions under pressure.

Kate holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management, where she concentrated in asset management and completed specialized global coursework in fintech and sustainable finance, and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law. She is a frequent speaker on corporate governance, sustainability, and emerging topics, including AI, and has guest lectured at leading law and business schools.

Kate has spent her entire career at the intersection of law, business, and governance — and built Ascent to help clients elevate their ability to create sustainable growth.
